The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. I had the opportunity to meet and learn from the original author, John Van de Walle. What an amazing, kind, and dedicated man!!

This is the third edition of this STAPLE resource. It addresses all domains of mathematics- and is filled with information, tasks, lessons, and ready-to use teaching resources.

This is a keeper!

This easy-to-read book outlines how to apply the core ideas of developmentally appropriate practice, or DAP for short, in kindergarten.  The book discusses:

  • the core components of DAP

  • why play is an essential vehicle for learning during the kindergarten year

  • the five key aspects of effective teaching that enact DAP principles

  • the most frequently asked questions about developmentally appropriate practice in kindergarten

  • an overview of learning and development for 5- and 6-year-olds.

If you teach kindergarten -or if you support those who do- this book is for YOU!

Developing Number Concepts

By Kathy Richardson

This is one of my all-time favorite series of resource books on number sense.  I’ve never found more comprehensive resources focused on number concepts than these classics! Each book is packed with activities, tips, and ideas all grounded in what we know about how young children develop an understanding of number.

  • Book 1: Counting, Comparing, and Pattern

  • Book 2: Addition & Subtraction

  • Book 3: Place Value, Multiplication & Division

Math Perspectives also provides excellent workshops and trainings on these and other materials.

I have had the pleasure of learning from and working with Kathy on various PD projects over the years (woohoo!).  She knows young children and how to help them uncover math concepts.  She's definitely one of my 's-heroes'!

This book provides appropriate and meaningful activities to actively pre-kindergarten students so they can meaningfully develop mathematical ideas related to:

  • number

  • geometry

  • sorting and classifying

  • patterns

  • measurement

  • data collection

In all, more than 70 activities are included for circle time, small group, and individual instruction.
